Trend Report: How to wear the blanket scarf
Alice Newbold
Burberry's monogrammed ponchos might have stolen our hearts on the autumn/winter 2014 catwalk, but here's how
Belt up
Draped nonchalantly over one's shoulders, blanket scarves certainly look easy to pull-off, but what happens
when a gust of wind threatens? Or one gets jostled in a crowd?
To avoid constantly tugging at one's cape-like cover-up (see Sarah Jessica Parker, left) there is an easy solution: a belt!
Cinching in the waist not only adds outfit security when on the move,
it highlights the fact you do have a womanly figure under that mass of woollen material.
Be your own pattern pioneer
You might have fallen for Burberry's heritage checks hook, line and sinker, but there's nothing worse than owning the same conspicuous cover-up
as everyone else on the scene. And we're not just talking about Burberry's eye-watering blankets, as, predictably, the high street have picked up on
checks too. Instead of the wine coloured tartan, take heed of blogger Hedvig Opshaug (left) and seek out unusual prints
(hers still come by way of Burberry) that will get you noticed.
Have a hat to hand
All that drapery and print can benefit from another point of interest. Enter the wide-brimmed hat; currently available
on the high street in a variety of autumnal hues. Perfect for adding to the seasonal look of your cover-up.
Say it with skinnies
Pairing a poncho with anything fluid down below will simply wash out your entire figure. Let your blanket do the
talking and your legs stay shapely by wearing skinny jeans. You know it makes sense when Miroslava Duma (right),
who is never seen in denim, drapes her Burberry over some stonewashed skinnies.
Wait for winter
Going back to the basic fact that Burberry launched its monogrammed ponchos as part of its autumn/winter 204 collection,
scarves are designed to keep us warm. The fashion pack will obviously flounce around the shows sporting their initialled numbers,
but the best looks are the cosiest ones where scarves trail over trenches and coats. Wrap up folks!
Get your draping right
The point of ponchos is to drape the fabric over your shoulders, not around them, like a shrug.
Side note for males reading: mostly only men at fashion week will wear this still of poncho-come-scarf.
